Flag Friendly - Match Report
October 12th, 2009

The Coventry Huskies and Bears travelled to reigning champions Studley for their first pre-season scrimmage sessions. The Bearcats had the upper hand overall on the day, though all teams found the experience invaluable, learnt a lot and had a fun day playing.

The Huskies featured 3 rookies, the speedy Chanel Ghataura along with her older sister Priya, who the coaches’ feel can be a real presence in the passing game. Libby Overton, the third Husky debutant enjoyed her first ever game in the sport, though enjoyed helping herself to her bothers lunch, whilst he was on the pitch, even more.

Captain Vickie Mepstead had a great day at Quarterback, throwing a TD pass to Husky MVP Precious McCook. McCook also led the team on tackles, which included making the tackle on 3 consecutive plays. If that isn’t enough, she also threw a TD pass. Precious, clearly enjoying her time with the Huskies enthused “We’re a proper team; everyone encourages each other and works hard for their team mates”

The Bears also featured some newbies. Quaretback Brandon Consadine threw a TD pass, dedicating his first strike to his heroes Mark Cohen & Jeremy Simms who encouraged him to take up the sport. Peter Novis, also in his first ever game switched between safety and blitzer to great effect.

Veterans Meshach McCook and (Super) Dan Overton continued the form from last season. Meshach got a “pick 6”, whilst Overton snared two short passes scampering into the endzone, finishing his cadet career in style, as he now moves up to the juniors. Bears Coach Lisa Eaton awarded the MVP to Brandon Consadine for an assured day at QB and determined play at “Lion Backer” (That’s line backer to you and me).

“It’s so good for the guys to get that first game under their belt leaving the field with a smile on their face” beamed Head Coach Andrew Gambrill.
