Coventry’s American Football Flag Academy have teamed up
with two of the City’s Brownie packs to help stage the first ever Brownie Bowl.
With more female players and coaches than any other team, the Jets lead
the way in encouraging women and girls to partake in a male dominated sport.
Academy Head and current British American Football Coaches Association Coach of
the Year, Andrew Gambrill, has a tremendous track record of developing female
talent and it’s two of his protégés that have been preparing the Brownies for
Monday’s contest.
Lisa Eaton will lead her Tile Hill Wildcats into battle
against Tikisha McCook and the St Thomas Tigers. “This promises to be a lot of
fun” stated Gambrill, looking forward to the contest “we're hoping that if this
is a success, that we’ll extend the opportunity to other Brownie packs who want
to invite us in and arrange similar events. Ultimately we are hoping the
youngsters enjoy themselves so much that they want to join the Jets team”.
Monday the 8th of March is the date set for the inaugural
Brownie Bowl with the Sports Connexion in Ryton set to host. Sales and
Marketing Manager James Duffy is also eagerly anticipating the event “here at
The Sports Connexion, we’re delighted to be able hold the new & unique
sport of Flag football on behalf of the Coventry Jets, as we, like the Jets
understand the importance of giving the people of Coventry and Warwickshire
access to sports in their area as part of a healthier lifestyle”.
The Academy is open
to anyone aged from 7 to 18 with anyone older eligible to play Senior Flag.
Last year the Academy sent a team from each age group, Cadet, Junior and Youth,
to the National Finals in Doncaster, a feat they will be looking to repeat in
2010. For further information about getting involved visit their website www.coventrygridiron.com or www.coventryjets.co.uk.
